Generator Frequency Conversion

When connecting a generator to a power grid it must be configured to operate at the same frequency (60 Hz or 50 Hz). The two main frequencies that the world’s power grids operate on are 50 Hz and 60 Hz. Most countries operate on 50 Hz power supplies; such as in the United Kingdom, Russia, and China. However the United States operates on a 60 Hz grid. Some countries, like Japan operate on both 50 Hz and 60 Hz frequencies. It is essential to not only match the frequency of electrical grids but also the voltage and phase of the power supply, which will be discussed in future issues. Remember, it’s always best to consult the manufacturer when installing or configuring generator components.  
 
Power grids around the world run mainly on two frequencies: 60Hz or 50Hz.  Most generators can be converted to match the proper frequency. The voltage and phase of a generator must also match the grid to ensure compatibility.
